Receptive Help - Thursday, August 13, 2009

When working in a Pilates studio in the UK, my then boss – the fabulous Paul McLinden (www.oceanwavepilates.co.uk) – told me I should try GYROTONIC® because I would absolutely love it. Being already pressed for time with a very young baby, I reluctantly went one day to visit Laurie, the only Gyro teacher for miles around. He took me through some basic exercises and I was immediately hooked. It felt like the organic nature of the movements was what my body had craved for so long. I very quickly was able to justify taking the time to go to see my teacher once per week to get my ‘fix’ of Gyro so that I could feel the freedom that it gave me, and my body.

The GYROTONIC EXPANSION SYSTEM® is an exercise modality that guides users to simultaneously stretch and strengthen muscles and tendons while also articulating and mobilising the joints. Corresponding breathing patterns are used during the performance of the exercises, thereby increasing coordination, endurance and aerobic activity. As a result, one develops a body with lean musculature, which is strong, flexible and injury free.

The benefits are felt straight away as your body is taken through wonderful undulating movements, rejuvenating the flexibility and strength in the spine. All the joints are taken through their complete range of movement, with a focus on all strength radiating from one’s ‘seed centre’.

The GYROTONIC® Tower is a spectacular piece of machinery and looks like something Gaudi may have designed! Working out on it always looks fun but don’t be fooled, it’s remarkably challenging for both men and women.

Paul was right! I did love it, and quickly found that having worked for a time on a GYROTONIC® tower, I was able to progress to the advanced Pilates repertoire with renewed strength and vigour.
